Flannel and Terry Cloth

How to make DIY Burp Cloths

I bought both the Flannel fabric and Terry Cloth from Joann. I absolutely love the Nursery fabric selection at Joann. You can spend hours deciding between fabrics which I personally enjoy! Flannel fabric is perfect for burp cloths because it is more absorbent than cotton. The Terry Cloth provides a nice backing to the burp cloth because it can both absorb and wipe well.

With 1/2 yard flannel fabric and 1/2 yard terry cloth, you can make 4 burp cloths.

  1. Trim the flannel fabric. Cut the 1/2 yard flannel fabric into 4 equal parts.
  2. Trim the terry cloth. Cut the 1/2 yard terry cloth into 4 equal parts.
  3. Lay each flannel piece on top of a terry cloth piece. Cut each to be exactly the same size. For my particular fabrics they came to be approximately 9 inches by 16 inches.
  4. Lay the right side of the flannel fabric face down onto the terry cloth. Start sewing on the shorter side about 4 inches above the corner. Sew all the way around except for a 4 inch space between where you started sewing and where you end.start sewing here4 inch space
  5. Cut above the four corners of the burp cloth before turning it inside out.

6. Turn Burp Cloth inside out. Sew along edge that has the opening. Sew very close to the edge.

7. After sewing closed the open edge, sew a top stitch all the way around the burp cloth. Sew approximately 1/2 inch from the edge of the burp cloth.

Where the open edge was sewn you will sew a top stitch as well. On that side it will look like this:

Your burp cloth is now complete! This may become your go-to baby shower gift for your expectant friends. It’s easy, fun and very useful!
