Making things for your baby or for anyone you love is SO satisfying. It has been getting chilly around here and my little guy was in need of a warm hat! My mom taught me how to make these hats when I was 10 years old. It was one of the first things I learned how to sew! This will be the easiest baby hat you will ever make! You do not need a sewing machine to sew this hat, although it will be much quicker with a machine. You can also make a matching hat for yourself by cutting a larger piece of fabric.

How to Make a Baby Hat
First, measure the circumference of your baby’s head. My little guy is 4 months old and his head circumference was about 17 inches.
Fleece is stretchy so there is no need to cut your fabric longer than the head circumference. Cut your fabric to the length of their exact head circumference and a height of about 11 inches. This height will make your hat more “roomy” and your baby will have room to grow. If you want the hat more snug, make your height an inch or more shorter.
Fold in half with right side together. When folded it should measure 1/2 of baby’s head circumference x height (11 inches).
As shown in the picture above, sew along the long edge from top to bottom. Sew 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from edge.
Fold bottom of hat up about 1 inch. Pin in place as shown below.
Sew all the way around hat.
Take out pins and flip hat right side out.
Cut strips from the top of the hat that are about 3.5 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Make sure the first strip you cut is around your seam.
Cut strips all around hat.
Take two adjacent strips and wrap them around all the strips. Tie a knot.
Your baby hat is now complete!! If you loved making it, go ahead and make a matching one for yourself.
