Quiet Books

What You Need to Make a Quiet Book

While pregnant with my son, I “nested” like crazy and took on all sorts of sewing projects. At the top of my list: a quiet book. I found it would be much more affordable AND more fun to make my own quiet book for my son. There were a lot of supplies I found very useful for making this quiet book, and in this post I will share them with you! Some of these items you may already have in your craft stash!

Pre-cut Felt

I love these 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) pre-cut felt sheets from Amazon. Leave the ruler and scissors behind – you won’t need them for these perfectly uniform pages of your book. You can make an entire quiet book from one purchase of this package. Simply select the sheets in the package you want for the pages. Then, use the remaining sheets to create the activities in your book.

Recently, I have used more fabric for my pages but I still use felt for all the activities. To see an example, check out this post about my “Under the Sea” Quiet Book here.

Invisible Thread

I LOVE this Gutermann Invisible Thread from Amazon. This thread speeds up the process – no need to change your thread color for each item you sew. I wish I found this thread earlier! I started my project using regular white thread (you may notice in some of the photos) but after this discovery, I incorporated the invisible thread for the entire remainder of the book.  I’ve tried a few invisible thread brands before, but this one is my favorite. It’s a high-quality, 274-yd spool of thread. I highly recommend it!

Eyelet Hole Punch Pliers and Eyelets

I love using the Eyelets for the quiet book activities. There is so much you can do with them! I’ve also used them for a “tying your shoe” page.

Snaps

These sew-on snaps are a must-have for your quiet book. From fruit on trees to pepperoni on pizza, the activity possibilities are endless.

Zippers

I found that 4-inch zippers were the perfect size for the 20cm x 20cm felt pages. If you don’t want to buy them in bulk, you can buy single zippers from JOANN Fabrics and Crafts or your local craft store.

Cord

Cord is also helpful when building your quiet book. Perfect for a “tying your shoe” page or for threading through eyelets to move objects across pages. I purchased the cord from JOANN Fabrics and Crafts.

Buttons

Buttons can be used for fun activities, e.g., building a caterpillar, buttoning up a shirt, putting petals on a flower, or any other creative idea that you come up with.

Sewing Velcro

Quiet Book page of velcro puzzle

Although VELCRO may not be very quiet, it’s a great tool for making puzzles. The above page features a boat puzzle with VELCRO. I recommend purchasing sewing VELCRO rather than adhesive VELCRO. If you use the adhesive type, your sewing needle will get very sticky from sewing through the adhesive side of the VELCRO. Since making this pictured quiet book, I’ve also found that I love blending the color of the VELCRO with the color of the background, or the color of felt I’m sewing it to. Sewing VELCRO comes in many colors rather than the common black and white.

To bind the quiet book, I used 1/2 yd of fabric. Check out our post, “How to Bind a Quiet Book” here.

I hope these items are helpful to you in creating your quiet book! Happy making!
